1. Always wash your face morning and night.
When you go to sleep without washing your face, all the dirty bacteria start working to create more acne. Wash your face before you go to sleep especially! Have a simple go-to skincare routine if you’re lazy.
Sometimes I get lazy and then my skin breaks out. Washing your face consistently helps to prevent aging. Make sure to always remove your makeup too, not doing that is very bad for your skin.
2. Wash Your Dirty Pillowcase & Swap Out for a New One Every Night.
Your pillowcase is so dirty and if you constantly end up putting your face on it, you’re rubbing your bacteria all over your skin. Instead, use a new pillowcase every night even if that means you have to have quite a few pillow cases before your wash day. Also use a Satin pillowcase to help prevent wrinkles. It’s best to lay on your back instead of on your stomach and side so your face doesn’t rub up against your pillow.
3. Try some DIY Skincare Methods to brighten your skin.
It’s okay to use store-bought skincare products, but we should sometimes use homemade natural skin care products that. Homemade stuff is less processed and healthier for the skin overall. I’m making the effort to start replacing some of my skincare products with DIY skincare products. Always test out the product in a small area of your skin first to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.
Here are some DIY skincare recipes I’ve started trying:
DIY Sugar Scrub
- 1 Cup of Sugar (Brown Sugar, Unrefined Pure Cane Sugar, or Raw Turbinado Sugar)
- 3 – 5 TBS of Olive Oil (or Avocado, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil)
- 3 Drops of Essential Oils (Chamomile, Jasmine, Rose, Lavender, Peppermint, Etc.)
Directions: Add your sugar to a container and then add the oil one tablespoon at a time. Make sure the texture is like sand. If there’s too much of a liquid texture, add more sugar. Then add 3 drops of your favorite essential oil. You can use this all over your body. Make sure to wash your face and body before use. Use two times a week, or a little more if your skin is still rough.
Note: Brown sugar is the softest and should be used if you have sensitive skin. Turbinado sugar is rougher. You want to get rid of dead skin because it is dull and will prevent you from glowing up.
DIY Turmeric, Honey & Lemon Brightening Face Mask
- 2 Tbs of Honey
- 1 Tsp of Turmeric
- 2 drops of lemon juice
Directions: Add your honey to a container, then add the turmeric. Mix and then add the lemon juice. Put the mask all over your face and neck. Don’t forget to take care of your neck too because that’s where we often get wrinkles in older age.
Note: It’s messy so be careful of stains! Your face could be yellow at first because of the turmeric.
Benefits of Turmeric:
- Turmeric helps to get glowing skin
- Could help with scars from acne
This mask may help decrease blackheads too. Lemon juice helps with brightening.
DIY Rice Toner
- 1/2 cup of White Rice
- 1 1/2 cups of water
- Orange Peels
- 2 drops of Rose Essential Oil
Directions: Ferment your water first. Start with rinsing it off and then place it in a jar or bowl with a lid that can firmly close. Sit the rice in the water for 24 hours and drain the water after. Put into a bottle and add extra water to dilute it because it has too many nutrients to use alone. Shake it before it before each use. Take a little and pat it all over your face.
Benefits of Rice Water
- Protects and repairs skin
- Has enzymes that brighten skin
- Reduces aging
Korea and Japan use a lot of rice products for their skin.
4. Go to sleep at the same time every night and until you feel well-rested.
Our skin breaks out more and looks dull when we don’t get enough sleep. You want to look alert and upbeat for the day and getting enough sleep helps with that. When we go to sleep at the same time every day, it helps us to sleep faster. Try to stay off technology at least an hour before you go to sleep so your mind can relax.
5. Stop eating too many highly processed foods and eat more colorful, nutritious meals.
You should be getting your daily amount of protein, fruits, veggies, etc. According to the CDC, only 1 in 10 adults actually eats enough daily fruits and veggies. Measure exactly how much fruits and veggies you are eating. If you don’t want to keep up with that, measure using smoothie cups. Put all your fruits and veggies into smoothies and measure if you are getting your daily nutrients that way.
For meals, if you don’t like cooking, try to prepare easy dishes 30 mins and under. Find recipes that you can cook in one pot or pan. Eating lots of colorful foods will especially help you to get glowing skin.
6. Take your daily vitamins that have the recommended amount of Vitamin A, C, D, E, Omega Fatty Acids, Biotin, Zinc, etc.
You’ll be shocked by how deficient you might be in some of these. Whenever I go to the doctors, they always get on my case about eating more Iron. Try your best to get most of this in your food and makeup for the rest in your daily vitamins.

7. Take breaks from wearing makeup and focus on your skincare routine.
I rarely ever wear makeup, maybe a few times a year. I’m often told that I look like I’m in high school by people older than me. If you want that youthful looking skin, the less makeup you wear, the better. Try not to put too much on and really focus on your skincare routine to improve your appearance. Your skin will thank you as you get older.
8. Drink your recommended amount of water daily.
According to WebMd, women should be drinking 9 cups of water daily, but you can change it based on what your body needs. Basically, you know when you get enough water when your pee is more clear. Some people even get a big bottle with measurements to measure how much water they have drunk. If you have limited memory, you might want to start a system to check how much water you are drinking.
9. Wear sunscreen EVERY time you go out.
Even if you are just going to the corner real quick, wear your sunscreen. The sun is so damaging to our skin, it’s literally burning your skin. It also causes you to age faster. Apply it when you’re indoors with your blinds open too. It can still transfer through the windows.
Make sure the sunscreen is 30+ SPF to block more of the UV rays.
10. Using different types of oils as lotion for your body.
Use olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, Vitamin E oil, etc. on your body to moisturize all the dry cracked skin. Different oils have different benefits, so why not use multiple at the same time? Some of the oils are very affordable too and they will last a lot longer than lotion. Add this with shea butter for extra moisture.
11. Try not to be stressed out all the time.
When we’re too stressed, we have a hard time sleeping, we eat poorly, and our skin starts to be a reflection of that. Learn how to release your stress on a regular basis. Start meditating, taking a break from technology, journaling, etc. to help decrease your stress level.
12. Study the best skincare methods in every country and try to see what works for you.
A lot of countries have their best go-to methods to get glowing skin that they’ve been doing for hundreds of years. Look for people whose skin you admire and see what best practices they do. I personally like following the Korean skincare routine and really have a longer routine. There’s so many different types of natural DIY products you can make! Like rice water is really popular in Asia for skin and hair.
